If you can check all of the points below, then you are buying a top-quality piece of rattan furniture
- The material should be PE Synthetic rattan with full UV protection
- The framework for all the furniture should be made from aluminum and be powder coated
- The framework should be welded and not bolted together
The 1 area to look at is the assembly of the furniture. Stay away from flat pack rattan furniture that needs assembling where possible. This means that the framework will not be fully welded and will also probably be made of steel, which can rust. It also means that there is a possibility of the bolts coming undone and falling apart or even rusting and causing stain marks on your furniture.

The PE rattan material is very strong and robust so will be able to withstand rain or spillages easily.
If you haven’t ticked all 3 items above then the likely hood is that your rattan furniture, although in the short term may be waterproof, will not have the life span as expected. If the framework is steel then there is the risk of rusting if water penetrates the paintwork. Water can sometimes sit on these cushions and cause staining or ring marks as it dries which will be hard to remove. Brown, Grey or Natural coloured Rattan Furniture?

(Apart from my daughter!) It is also good to note that most styles and rattan sets that are available come in all these colours. There isn’t any benefit to having 1 style in any particular colour and the functionality of any furniture remains the same! Well, the initial benefits have just been covered. Brown is 1 of the natural colour that we associate with being outside and also with our garden. Brown Garden furniture is meant to blend in and that’s exactly what it does for most. Looking at a practical perspective, brown rattan furniture will also help hide any marks or stains that may bet onto the rattan. Being a dark colour any stains may not show through so obviously. As with most rattan furniture cleaning should be done regularly and immediately after any spillage, but always good to know![/vc_column_text]

You may have some paving or walls that are grey? But other than painted pieces in your garden, it doesn’t really appear naturally. And this is what is great about grey rattan furniture, its neutral! As with the grey rattan furniture, the natural look really helps to set off other colours in your garden. This is a natural durable material that has been used, and still is used for many furniture applications. Wicker is popular as it is very flexible and can be woven easily to create strong stable structures. The materials can give a great look for a great price but they have drawbacks. PVC and PU rattan materials are not designed for long term use. These materials are not very weatherproof and will need to be well protected, especially over the winter period to ensure that they maintain their look and strength. They have a tendency to crank and go brittle in cold weather. They can also stretch and ‘Sag’ in very hot weather. Once this happens there is no way of getting them back into shape. Rattan furniture made from this material would have a life expectancy of 2-3 years max. As with all outdoor garden furniture it is recommended to use covers or to store your furniture indoors where possible. The expected lifespan from these sets is anything upto 10 years. You will also find some manufacturers so confident of this material that they will offer a 10 year guarantee on their furniture.
